This looks to me like a tub which would be used down the pit.

Wortley Hall, Nr. Barnsley. This is a beautiful building, situated in the pretty village of Wortley (between Barnsley and Sheffield).

Wortley Hall was the ancestral home of the Earls of Wharncliffe – the Lords of the Manor of Wortley. The earliest recording being Alnus de Wortley, mentioned in the Pipe Rolls for 1165. Sir Thomas Wortley, born in 1440 lived in the manor Wortley, believed to be Wortley Hall. His grandson Sir Richard Wortley rebuilt Wortley Hall in 1586.

Sir Francis Wortley commanded a loyalist (during the English Civil War) garrison atTankersley, which was nearby, he led the battle on Tankersley moor where he was captured by the Roundheads and taken to the Tower of London. I have heard tell of cannon balls which have beeen found at Tankersley.

Wortley Hall fell into disrepair until the mid 18th century. Edward Wortley commissioned the rebuilding of the hall. In 1800.

The grounds are beautifully laid out and tended, I have spent three holidays there and had a wonderful time.

They show the newly refurbished Methodist Church on Barnsley Road and another of Snydale Road Primary School - now Churchfields Primary School which celebrated its Centenaryin 2001.
