I came on your web site to look for pitures of locke park tower preferable one took from the top looking out. From the age of about 7 to about 10 I used to have dreams about being locked in the tower and being seriously abused. I think it was some time in or around the war. I don\'t know which one but in my dream I was looking out at the top and Barnsley was full of fields all the modern buildings that stand today were not there. I\'m writing this firstly to say well done, secondly to appeal to everyone who visits this site. If anyone genuinly has any information about a murder or suicide of a woman in the Locke Park Tower with long blonde hair aged about 18 to 30 wearing a white dress of some sort in either the first or second world war could you please contact me at my email address would be much appreciated. Athough the dreams lasted about 3 years they will haunt me the re |

I needed to find out the wording of the leaflet dropped over the abbey to warn of its impending destruction, and lo and behold there it is on your site in Italian and English - just what I was looking for! I had a stickybeak at the rest of your site and it\'s very interesting - well done. I liked your father\'s letters home from Italy and the story of his unruly hair and the headmaster during his schooldays. The site\'s a great glimpse into everyday life in the UK in the 40s and 50s, a valuable personal history - congrats again! Regards Matt |

| Name: Peter Steer. Email: peter-steer@tiscali.co.uk Date: Thu Jan 13 19:46:58 EST 2005 What an interesting site. One of the most tragic accidents happened at the Old Oaks Colliery in Barnsley in 1866 when the explosion, in the pre christmas \"bull week\" caused the greatest loss of life in England since the battle of Culloden. The accident brought out the best in men and the monument on Kendray Hill commemorates -not the men lost in the explosion - but the rescuers who went into the still burning pit and were themselves killed. With over 300 men and boys still in the pit the shafts were fillede to starve of oxygen. I have been unable to ascertain if the bodies were ever recovered. The catastrophe was of such magnitude that even Queen Victoria sent a note of condolence to the mine owners at the loss of their mine ! Little seems to be known now of this valour, even in Barnsley. which is a great pity. Perhaps you could include a piece on your site. Regards - Peter |

| Name: John Murray Email: john.murray@chestertramways.com Date: Sat Jun 26 04:45:58 EDT 2004 I was brought up in Ward Green and I have a keen interest in trams also. I enjoyed your article on the Barnsley trams. However, Barnsley had two tramways, as well as the Barnsley & District (later Yorkshire Traction)system, there was also the Dearne District Light Railway, opened in 1924, which ran from the former Alhambra cinema on Doncaster Road, to Stairfoot, Wombwell and Wath then with branches to Thurnscoe, Manvers and Swinton. This tramway, the last built in the UK until the Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992, lasted just 9 years. However, one of the trams still survives to this day, in use as a summer house near to Penistone. If you would like me to send you a photo, please Email me. |

| Name: John Townend Email: jtownend@comcast.net Date: Wed May 12 17:45:21 EDT 2004 Hi Mary, A wonderfully evocative web site for me. I left Barnsley in 1948 aged 11. Thats a long time ago and I\'ve lived in many places since but early memories of growing up, first on Upper Sheffield Rd., then at Queens Gardens in Gawber are quite vivid. I finished up in sunny Florida, the climate\'s better but Barnsley is the place where I had Grandparents and about a dozen aunts and uncles, the place I still think of as home. Three years ago my wife and I drove about 70 miles with my 94 year old mother to attend Mass at Holy Rood. It looked the same as it did 50 years earlier but sadly the familiar faces were gone! We may not get back to Barnsley again but your website will get family vists. Thanks! |

| Name: Dennis Daigle Email: daiglem@comcast.net Date: Fri Jan 31 22:37:27 EST 2003 Mary, I love your website! Your little town looks very warm and charming. Please note the change to my email address. I finally got high speed internet service. Now the ISP tells me if I would buy a newer faster machine I would really see a major difference in how fast I could surf the net. There is always just one more thing that you have to do to make everything work right, I swear there is no end to it. Regardless of that I am happy with it just the way it is my internet speed went from about 31-36K to over 775K that is about 25 times faster. So, to downlad something that would have taken 25 minutes before can now be done in one minute. Thanks for your support with Wendell and his whining about all the war stuff. So far he has made 2 or 3 post over my comments. I think he needs to get a life and I still believe that messages like that do not help to foster the warm, comforting and supportive type of community that we are trying to build for all those in need. A pleasure as always to get one of your emails and I look forward to your call. When I get my PC put back the way I had it before the internet installers got hold of it, I will spend some more time looking at your delightful website. Come to think of it, it has the appearence of the kind of place that those in need of peace would like to come to. Maybe Wendell should take a look, he just might learn something about grace, elegance and style, all are qualities that you are blessed with. God Bless Dennis D. |

| Name: Michael Lipscombe Email: mike.nucleus@xtra.co.nz Date: Fri Aug 08 20:09:51 EDT 2003 Hello Mary Lipscombe I have been tracing the family history recently, due to my father passing on. His name was David Thomas Lipscombe, he lived and died in Invercargill New Zealand at age 78. Most of our relatives live here in NZ or in australia. I was wondering where the Lipscombe family (thatyou are part of) originated, and if there are connections to New Zealand in there. The earliest records we have are of a marriage of John Lipscombe to a girl surnamed Holland in the 1840\'s. Research can drive you crazy! So many leads in so may directions. However, we have had trouble finding out about the Lipscombes pre-NewZealand, and would appreciate any help. Cheers Michael Lipscombe |

| Name: Carol Cureton Email: Smiffie12@aol.com Date: Sun Oct 05 19:41:02 EDT 2003 I found your website while browsing through Barnsley sites Last Saturday evening (4.10.03). I have worked my way steadily through your families story and found it very interesting and amusing. It has brought back memories of my childhood, though my childhood was in the sixties and seventies. But many of the places you cover i know. Thankyou for entertaining me for a couple of days. I love to see pictures and read about Barnsley, and yours was one of the best. Thankyou Carol. |

| Name: Carol Cueton Email: Smiffie12@aol.com Date: Mon Oct 06 18:16:30 EDT 2003 Dear Mary, Thankyou for your E-Mail, (6.10.03). Just to add to my e-mail, that my Partner, Barrie Sedgwick\'s Grandfather and Grandmother owned Sedgwicks Corner Shop, on the corner of Westgate and Sackville street, opposite the tin factory and I was wondering if you remembered them when you were young. They had to move up Worsbrough Common when the Streets had to be demolished. There first names were Eva Sedwick and i think Alfred. Thanks you again for a brilliant site, Carol Cureton |

The shop is no longer there, the late George Partridge (snr), used it as his work shop and offices for his plumbing business. Mary |

| Name: Chris Corker Email: criscrok@aol.com Date: Fri Nov 28 19:16:03 EST 2003 Thank you for your wonderful website. I really enjoyed reading/looking at it. Although you are 7 yrs older than I am, I remember vividly the early 1950`s and many of the things that poor families had to do to get by-------5 in a bed with fathers ex-army greatcoat for extra warmth, people using jam-jars to drink from, rag and bone men, etc etc. It was nice to see the old photographs on screen ( despite having books!!) Also thank you for the link to the expats site----I may sign up even though I am only in Derbyshire. Thanks again Chris Corker |
